Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby team selection news

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has been in two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper does not regain full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
